Not
the TRC News was the Students Newspaper / Magazine at
Thomas Rotherham College in Rotherham, South
Yorkshire
It
was initially created as timetable filling TRAC
course, but as such it struggled for both finances and support.
In the summer of 2000, myself (Chris Read) and Tom Ellard were
appointed joint editors and we were able to negotiate a deal with
the reasonable newly formed Students Union to become the
official magazine, in exchange for funding.
As
such it was able to carry advertising for the regular SU events,
as well as updated the student populous on the actions of their
Union. At least that was the idea
Under
my own high-minded ideals, it became a student-y interpretation
of a cross between The Sunday Times Magazine and the New
Statesman. At least that was how I saw it. Of course, it became
about as popular as you might expect those two publications to be
with a group of 16 to 18 year olds, with sales only rescued by a
cover price of nothing.
Still,
you can judge for yourself the results of our efforts from this
Id
like to thank all the people who contributed to these and other
editions which I cant lay my hands on to make available.
Their hours really were appreciated, by me if no one else. My
special thanks goes to Shailesh Shah, who managed to fit William
Hague and John Redwood into two separate football articles for
the same edition (one of which is available here). I think he was aiming at quite a
specific market there. Cheers Shai.
Further
to that, my eternal thanks goes to Mr Michael Britland, a good
friend of mine (depite him being another damned Tory), a regular
contributor, and Treasurer - the man who made the whole thing
viable. I wish him the best of luck in the future, and await
meeting him at the despatch box. Cheers mate.
And
after all that, enjoy!
