In a considered
statement John Major was quoted as saying that Students’ Unions were “one
of the great evils facing society” - alongside motorway service stations
and new age travellers. This view is no doubt echoed by our parent’s
generation, as they remember the stereotypes built in the late 1960s and
70s where protest seemed akin with kebabs: Just another part of student
life. Benjamin Miskell
This new Millennium must rally Unions to reach out to every student,
dispelling the myths created by past generations and ensuring that we are
more than simply a bar or common room; focus should be driven towards our
core aim of ‘enriching the lives of students’.
Where does this leave Students at Thomas Rotherham?
With your overwhelming support in a cross-campus referendum, your Student
Executive were able to establish the Thomas Rotherham College Student Union
(TRSU): ‘Committed to enriching the lives of students by representing and
protecting your interests both nationally and within the college’.
TRSU will be run by the Union Executive, with valuable input sought from
existing Tutor Set representatives, thereby ensuring true representation.
At no expense, every TRC student is automatically a member of TRSU, that
is, unless they wish to opt out.
Nationally we are affiliated to the National Union of Students, which
provides support to and government lobbying on a host of important issues
affecting students in Further Education.
Your Students’ Union will to be far more than just a glorified discount
card or pool table provider; we pledge to fulfil our mission statement by
putting students’ needs first every time.
‘United we stand, divided we fall’.
